Can Neurofeedback Be Used

While On Medication?

Many Clients start neurofeedback while on one or more medications.  After a number of sessions, it is not unusual for clients to  have a reduction in medications as the brain takes over more of the role of regulating itself.  This regulation occurs through

neurofeedback when certain brain waves are lowered and others increased which result in overall improvement in brain functioning. It is important for clients to communicate with their prescribing physician regarding neurofeedback and medications.

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

The therapist uses a computer while the client views a separate monitor during the session. Sensors are placed on the scalp over specific areas of the brain that are suspected to be causing problems. Specifically designed software provides video-type "games" or animated scenery that the client effectively plays with his brain. Through game rewards such as a spaceship increasing in speed, music increasing or decreasing in sound, and color changes, eventually the brainwave activity is "shaped" toward a more desirable and regulated performance.

Does Neurofeedback Cause

Permanent Change?

In General, it is reported that in many conditions, results are permanent.  Once the neuropathways are built and functioning optimally, they continue.  However, in some cases, follow-up sessions may be necessary.  The  client's outcome will depend upon the severity of the condition being treated and the client's life circumstances.
